Believe in Forever, 2015. Acrylic on Canvas - 1200 x 1200 mm

This painting was shipped to the Parnell Gallery in Auckland earlier this week, the gallery kindly asked me to write alittle about what was the thought behind the painting,

I am always actively listening too or reading quotes, they are scribbled in my diary or on the outside of my drawing folder. This is why I often write a quotation on the back of the canvas, that resonates how I am feeling or how the characters intuitively are developing on the canvas throughout the making. Of the myriad of extracts, waiting for a character to form on the canvas, Believe in Forever was about youth, perhaps time (however, I did not know this when the brush, paint and canvas met for the first time) until I happened upon the following quote,

I'd woken up early and I took a long time getting ready to exist

- Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) was a Portuguese poet and writer

Although, this quote could apply to any age, I felt the character on the canvas was young and could still believe in forever. I cannot explain how words and their meaning assist in making a painting, but, for me they do.

Alongside, Believe in Forever, painting Those who Mind don't Matter now too is displayed at the Parnell Gallery in Auckland.
